Armatures

Depending on the size, having an armature is necessary for support and strength. For example, larger pieces I would make or use a ready-made armature. Smaller sculptures that are in the 8-10 inch size, I add the armatures after sculpting the body part, especially the arms, by slicing a long slit down the inside of the arm and then inserting wire, leaving a half inch out of the shoulder area to insert into the torso. Then I close up the slit and blend together and then attach the arms to the torso.

As for the torso area, I usually insert a wire or a thin wooden stick into the pelvic area and feed up to mid torso. A wooden skewer for shish kabobs works really well.

For the neck, I insert a wire from the top of the head and push down into the center of the neck. Make sure that this is done slowly and carefully to avoid it coming out of the side of the neck.
